This movie is centred on a young man who got a date on a mobile conversation. He desired the best outing but at the appointed time, his car broke down and to complicate the problem, he forgot to recharge his mobile phone-it could not be powered on. He could not get a phone-booth to call her. She was dressed and ready but he never showed up as planned. She worried until she finally gave-up calling him on his mobile phone.

The date didn’t hold, so he tried getting back to her but she never allowed him to explain himself.

SOFTWARE

I had tried to work with the two major softwares required for the editing of my video clips, but personally, Avid didn’t really help me as expected. I had problems with capturing my video on Avid workspace or windows, but it didn’t work. It was not very difficult for me to start with Adobe premiere 6. The software got opened as soon as I selected it from the search menu.

After attaching my Dv-camera to the computer, I selected new projects from file menu and the standard formats for capturing my video from the DV-camera. From the image above, I had decided for DV-PAL, then I selected the portable TV mode-4:3.

OPENING, CAPTURING AND EDITING VIDEOS.

Capturing from Adobe premiere 6 starts by clicking file from the Menu Bar, select capture from the sub-menu list and finally click on Movie capture from the listed menus. Below is the resulted display, as I proceed to capture from the camera.

The windows displayed below features the untitled project sub-windows(containing the Bin), the Monitor (displaying the source and program screens) and the Timeline (where all captured video and audio clips are edited).

The image below is a display of the capture window on Adobe Premiere 6. The images on the mini-DV cassette can only be captured into the PC when the camera is set in a playback mode. This mode avails you the opportunity to start capturing process from any part of the tape. You can forward or rewind to the area you consider fit for capturing.

At this point, you can do a temporary screening by avoiding a few portions of the movies you consider not fit for Editing. The image displayed below is a window from Premiere 6, which is showing a capture process. It is very important that the capture parameter be set before the capture process could be done. The software will give a brief guide to how you intend sourcing for your clips- here, I had selected the firewire cable/plug as my source medium. The clips are previewed as I played the Camera from the windows panel. I clicked on the red button (capture button) directly beneath my play and the capture process begins instantly.

After each movie capture process is stopped, Premiere prompts that the clip be named and the clip is automatically place on the open BIN. I proceeded to capture more clips from my camera.

EDITING-POST PRODUCTION

This is about the most important aspect of the movie apart from recording. This process determines what goes out for public viewing and if it is not properly or carefully done, it could make a mess of the entire process. I consider editing to be the refining part of movie production.

The major actions I carried out here include:

v Editing the video clips

v Editing the sound/audio clip

EDITING THE VIDEO CLIP

Editing this particular movie was very tasking for me. The reason why I said it was very tasking was that, unlike normal movies, this particular movies was meant to last for just ten seconds; it is quite a challenging condition that is attached to this movie and at same time, it should communicate your idea.

The image above reveals clips captured into several Bins. I dragged the clips to the source clip display screen for further preview. Here, I had played each clip several times to decide what aspects directly communicate the message and purpose of the movie. I had further trimmed a few portion of the clip when I decide what I need and what I do not need, considering the time-10 seconds. Ones my mind is made up, I drag the clip over to the timeline.

EDITING ON THE TIMELINE

The movement of clips in my video has two phases:

v Moving clip from the Bin window to the timeline window.

v Moving clips around the timeline.

I would concentrate on the timeline because timeline gives you the opportunity to keep your eyes on the time while you are deciding on the actions you are carrying out with the clips.

On the timeline, I re-organised my clips in a sequence that fits to my original idea. I had each clip played one after the other because I had spaced them apart using the selection tool. I played the clips concurrently and back

EDITING- DUAL CLIPS EFFECTS USING MOTION

I created a dual clip effect on a screen by selecting the clip and left clicking the mouse to go to video options, then click motions from the list of menus. Below is the image display on the window.

I adjusted the zoom from the default 100% to a suitable size. I also the start and end effect of the slide clip and took note of the displayed preview. Below is the display of the settings for my motion.

I previewed the motion settings before proceeding to the next activity.

PRODUCING & IMPORTING TITLE PAGE

The title page and the credit page of this movie were made using Adobe photoshop. I loaded and opened photoshop. Opened a new document, filled the background layer with black fill from the colour palette. I typed in my written words and adjusted the font after highlighting the text. I had saved both images as JPEG files. Finally, I imported them into Adobe Premiere 6. I dragged them to the appropriate positions I had allotted to them. I selected each of them and set the duration time and speed I wanted them to run.

CAPTURING AND EDITING MY SOUND

I personally desired to get a non-copyrighted song for my movie but I could not get one. Also, I did not decide for 10secs.com because I may have problem with the copyright of my audio-piece.

I could not get a friend to produce a personal sound/audio clip for my movie, so I decided to go for free audio downloads from the internet. I had located an mp3 format sound track that would definitely fit to my movie. I clicked on the mp3 mode and the dialog box on the above image appeared, then, I selected save to disc and finally clicked OK.

The above image is a display of the next dialog box that appeared. I had clicked on the open button just on the left top corner of the window. I had other options like to remove or clean-up the downloads. The open button had given me access to listening to the track on windows media.

EDITING THE CAPTURED AUDIO-PIECE.

I played the downloaded audio on my PC when I got home. I connected my PC to my sub-woofer speaker set to produce a well balanced surround sound. I capture the sound clip needed as the full track played. I repeated the process and have the sound on playback mode. The mp3 sound recorder has the ability of capturing sound at about 105 db level on close contact with the sound.

I imported the sound clip to Premiere 6 and disable the original audio of the video clips. I had the sound output level adjusted by setting the fade-in fade-out.

After I imported my audio I had to start editing it on the audio timeline. I dragged it to the source monitor, played it several times and cut the portion that would fit into my movie. I dragged it to the timeline and editted it on the audio waveform. Also, I listened to it and applied the fade-in and fade-out on the audio clip using the volume rubber band.

I also made sure that the Left(L) and (R) channele of the audio clip are effective to maintain the desired amplitude and phase level(db level about 105).

CREATING CREDIT & INTRO PAGE WITH PHOTOSHOP

I had used the photoshop software for my title and credit page. I opened the graphic windows and set-up the page property. I had clicked on File, new from the menu. I set the pixel size to 800 x 600, and clicked on Ok. I had set the fore-ground color to black form the color pallette and filled the window with the defined color using the Paint bucket tool.

I clicked on the horizontal type tool to add text to the background. When i got satisfied with the text content, I saved the images as .Jpeg files. These images were later imported on the Adobe Premiere 6 timeline for further editing, on the story-board.

EXPORTING TIMELINE OF MOVIE

The process illustrated above displays how a completed movie is exported for packaging or some form of production. A completed movie captured in Premiere 6 would be saved in a .avi format but if you want it to be streamed on a website which would play it on quick-time, it would be named as a .mov extension file.

The major action i carried out here was to crop the image and removed a part of the image with a trademarked logo. I had removed the logo earlier but the removal was not properly done, so, i decided to add that portion to the cropping action. I discovered that it made the image look more natural by exposing it's full frame and dimensional characteristics. I finally adjusted the image color using the brightness and contrast tool from the list of sub-menus on the menu bar.

I highlighted the image with the rectangular marquee tool and rotated the image by 90 degree. I cropped a few part of the image off because the image has a few un-necessary spaces. I selected the image with a lasso tool and cut the image from the background. Also, i created a new layer for the image and pasted it there. i made a little adjustment on the image color with the brighness and contrast tool.

After selecting the entire image, i applied the brightness and contrast from the image adjustment sub-menu tool. This particular image was looking good before post-production, so, i decided to adjust only the few dark corners. This action was possible after making selection using ALT + magic wand tool.

The only post-production action i carried out on this particular image is adjusting the brightness(+16) and making use of the contrast(-25). I tried to increase the illumination of the image. i did not use the saturation tool although i tried it but it did not give my image the desired result i expected so i reverted the action. Moderation was my major rule while using these tools from the menu bar. I consider it an important principle, to be very close to my image before making a shot.

I had selected the image with the magic wand and concentrated on the gaps( in between) spaces on the keyboard. I adjusted the brightness of the inter-key spaces and finally selected the entire image. I improved the total output of the image by using the same brightness and contrast image adjustment tool from the menu bar. I made sure that i reach out for hidden dark spaces on my image, each time i used a magic wand for selection.

I selected a few dark portions of the image and I also used the brightness and contrast tool to adjust the brightness and sharpness of the image. The whole idea was to give the image a crisp look.

Copy the image to your opened photoshop program. You can do these by copying and pasting or dragging the image down and drag it to a photoshop program.

Duplicating image. I had duplicated the image after completing necessary adjustments on image. To duplicate image, i would select the image using triangular marquee tool, then i would click on IMAGE from the menu bar, and select duplicate from the drop down menu.

The image i copied was a torn and worn-out photograph. I had to use the rectangular marquee to higlight the image, select, drag and adjust the seperate parts of the image using polygon lasso and move tools. I trimmed away unwanted edge using the magic wand. I ameneded the scratches on the image and patched the scratch portions using the stamp clone tool. I constantly used the magic wand to select a gross portion and finally fit colors into it with the aid of the eyedropper tool.

Color and bright contrast. I had used these tools to give the image bright look or test how it would look when i try different contrast. I would click on the IMAGE, select adjustment and select color balance or select brightness/ contrast. I would just play on the colors to see the efftect the image, when i think it looks satisfactory, i would click on the ok button.

Soon as i get satisfied with the new appearance of the images, I would finally save the images.

I explored photoshop tools on the copy of the above image. I kept selecting a few portion of the flag using the magic wand, then, i would apply a few brightness & contrast. I carefully worked on the original color I had defined for the above flag-US FLAG. I later progressed to image of the lady holding the flag and her trumpet- using the hueing & saturation tool. The final part of the image i had worked on was the handle of the flag.

I copied the image and kept the original copy in close touch. I then explored the image using the image hueing & saturation tool from the image sub-menu. Also, i tried using the magic wand to select a few portion of the image and try out a few actions with these image effects. I had also, tried the contrast & brightness tool, just to try compare the final output of the image.

I kept adjusting the image color till i felt satisfied. sometimes, i would over apply the tools but would have to revert my actions.
